New military sacrifice plates for families

The law creates military sacrifice plates for immediate family of a qualifying deceased service member. The member must have died outside a combat zone while serving honorably and not due to willful misconduct. The deceased must have been a current member of the armed forces or reserves, the National Guard (state or federal), or the Coast Guard. Eligible relatives include spouses, parents or guardians in loco parentis, siblings, children, and grandparents. Plates show a distinctive emblem with the words military sacrifice. After you pay normal registration fees and the department verifies eligibility (with Veterans' Affairs certification if requested), plates are issued only for passenger cars, trucks up to 20,000 pounds, or motorcycles.

Changes to personalized and special plates

The department may issue personalized plates with up to seven characters; motorcycles are limited to six. Most special plates cost an extra $25 each registration period, but gold star, military sacrifice, and prisoner of war plates pay no extra. Special plates are available for vehicles under section 39-04-10.6, trailers, travel trailers, and motorcycles; for vehicles under section 39-04-10.6 the fee is a one-time $100. Plates with restricted characters cannot be renewed. If you sell the vehicle, you must remove the plates; you may transfer them to a replacement after paying the transfer fee.
