Beginning July 1, 2026, new faculty at five North Dakota two‑year state colleges cannot get academic tenure. The colleges are Bismarck State College, Dakota College at Bottineau, Lake Region State College, North Dakota State College of Science, and Williston State College. This applies only to people hired after July 1, 2026.
By July 1, 2026, state board colleges that offer tenure must adopt a written tenure policy. The policy must spell out promotion and tenure criteria, require annual evaluations of all faculty, and set post‑tenure reviews. The first post‑tenure review happens within three years, then at least every five years. A committee named by the president runs the review and must include your supervisor, at least one ranking administrator, and at most one other faculty member. The policy must define what happens after an unsatisfactory review, including possible removal. The State Board must approve the policy, and the institution and Board decide any removal.
State board colleges that offer tenure must label each faculty job ad as tenure‑track or non‑tenure‑track. If you are offered a tenure‑track job, the college must give you its board‑approved tenure policy when making the offer.
