Personal finance lessons required in North Dakota schools

Since July 1, 2010, North Dakota public and nonpublic schools must teach personal finance. A school can offer a stand-alone class or cover these topics in economics or problems of democracy. Topics include budgeting, saving and investing, credit and debt, banking, taxes, insurance, mortgages, retirement, college costs, consumer skills, and entrepreneurship. The regular classroom teacher may teach these topics. A district may ask the Superintendent each year, in writing, to use other courses if it shows at least as many students will learn these concepts.
