Every school must name a behavioral health resource coordinator. This person is the contact for students, families, and staff who need help. The superintendent keeps each coordinator’s contact information so people can find them.
A school district can provide at least eight hours of training every two years for teachers and administrators. Training covers youth behavioral health, child abuse, and child neglect. Districts can invite support staff to join. Topics may include trauma, social and emotional learning, suicide prevention, bullying, and referral options. Districts choose topics based on their annual needs assessment.
Teachers, administrators, librarians, and counselors must complete the state online mandated reporter training before their first license and each renewal. They must give proof of completion to the Education Standards and Practices Board. The Department of Health and Human Services provides the interactive online module. Colleges, schools, and regional education associations can offer trainings that meet this requirement. The superintendent works with regional groups to share materials and training opportunities with public and nonpublic schools. These trainings count for continuing education credit. The law repeals the old training statute.
