The state provides $50 million from the Strategic Investment and Improvements Fund for wastewater grants. The money is for July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027 and is one-time. At least $12.5 million must go to cities with fewer than 12,500 people, based on the latest federal census. If that amount is not awarded by April 1, 2027, DEQ may award the rest to other eligible projects.
North Dakota creates a DEQ grant program for local wastewater systems. Cities, counties, townships, and certain districts can get funds to build or fix collection, disposal, or treatment systems. The system must meet current rules, or the project must bring it into compliance. Grants do not pay for operations or maintenance. DEQ can cover up to 60% of a project, with no more than one grant per community each biennium. No single project can receive more than $12.5 million. Awards depend on available funds, and DEQ runs the program.
