Limited vehicle exceptions for hunters

You may use a motor vehicle to retrieve a big game animal you legally possess if you cannot easily carry it. After retrieval, you must return to the road or trail by the same route. For safety and normal travel, you may park on the roadside or right next to a road or trail. When you hunt big game during an open small game season, three off-road bans do not apply: the general off-road rule, the upland game rule during deer gun season, and the ban on driving through listed lands.

Stricter off-road rules for hunters

The law bans using motor vehicles off established roads or trails to hunt big or small game, statewide. This does not cover waterfowl or cranes. The ban does not apply if you own the land or have written permission from the landowner or a lessee who actively farms or ranches it. During deer gun season, you cannot use a vehicle off-road to hunt upland game without written permission. You also cannot drive through retired cropland, brush, sloughs, timber, open prairie, or cropland except on established roads or trails, unless the landowner or qualifying lessee gives you written permission. You may not use a vehicle to drive, chase, flush, or harass game.
