Starting January 1, 2025, new eligible public employees must enroll in the defined contribution retirement plan. You cannot join the main defined benefit pension if you become a participating member after December 31, 2024. This applies to permanent employees age 18 or older who meet chapter 54-52 rules. It does not apply if you are eligible for a specialized plan for law enforcement, judges, highway patrol, teachers, or the university alternative plan.
If you were a participating or deferred member before January 1, 2025, you stay in the defined benefit plan, even if rehired after December 31, 2024. If you are in the defined contribution plan and later qualify for a specialized plan (law enforcement, judges, highway patrol, teachers, or the university alternative plan), you may join that specialized plan. If you are in a specialized plan and later become an eligible employee, you do not enter the main defined benefit plan. You go into the defined contribution plan unless you were already a defined benefit member before January 1, 2025.
