More time to pass licensing exam

Genetic counselor license applicants have five years from their first exam to finish all certification requirements. You can make up to three attempts, unless the board allows an exception by rule. This applies to people seeking a North Dakota genetic counseling license.

Tighter rules for genetic testing by counselors

A genetic counselor may order or provide genetic tests only when a North Dakota licensed health care provider orders or coordinates the test. That provider must be allowed to order the test and keeps supervision of your care. The counselor must send reports to the referring or primary provider. If the counselor sees signs that need medical treatment, the counselor must refer you to a licensed medical provider. The law states genetic counselors do not practice medicine or give medical treatment.
