North Dakota residents who own at least 150 acres, or lease at least 150 acres they actively farm or ranch, can apply for one free antelope hunting license. File one signed application with a legal land description. The license lists that land and is valid only there, within a unit open for antelope hunting. Lessee applicants must show proof of an agricultural lease when asked. If the land is in a business, partnership, trust, or life estate, only one license is issued and it must be in the name of an individual owner, member, partner, beneficiary, or life tenant. The person named on the license must be a North Dakota resident. You may transfer your eligibility to your spouse or a legal dependent who lives with you, but then you cannot get a free license that season, and only one free license is allowed per qualifying land. If a farm or ranch lease does not say who gets the license, the landowner is entitled to receive it.
Free antelope licenses are capped at one-half of the total pronghorn license type set for each district or unit. If more eligible people apply than the number of free licenses, the free licenses are awarded by lottery as set by the governor. If a district has more than 50 total licenses and applications exceed that number, half of the licenses above 50 go to a lottery. Those seats cannot be given free to landowners. If you are eligible but do not get a free license, your application may go into the lottery for remaining licenses in that district.
