Tax credit or refund for former district homeowners

After a $10,000 reserve and a Job Service North Dakota deposit are set aside, a dissolved school district’s leftover cash funds a one-time break for property owners from that district. Up to the amount of the district’s last-year general fund spending becomes a credit against taxes billed by the district now serving your property. Your share is proportional to your property’s taxable value compared to the dissolved district’s total at attachment. With county commissioners’ approval and at the county auditor’s request, the county can pay cash refunds instead of credits. The treasurer pays the owner of record on the assessment list and first uses any amount to cover unpaid property tax liens.

Leftover funds to local governments and schools

After required set-asides, the county committee may give up to $500,000 of a dissolved district’s leftover cash to another local political subdivision within the old district’s boundaries. Remaining cash then goes to the property-owner tax credit or refunds. After those credits are satisfied, any money left is sent to the school districts that took the area, split by the share of taxable value attached to each district.
