Banks must keep your records private

Banks and credit unions must keep your financial records private. They can share only in the limited cases state law lists, like with your consent or valid legal process. They can also share to report suspected crimes, for certain public deposit rules, or when farm mediation notices are involved. Outside those narrow reasons, your bank cannot disclose your information.

Limited sharing to protect seniors, disabled

Banks and credit unions can share customer records to report suspected financial exploitation of an eligible adult. They can also share limited records with the state protection and advocacy project to investigate abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a person with a disability. Shared records are limited to what is needed and stay confidential under state law. The law does not require banks to investigate or to make these reports.
