Records and digital media at a children’s advocacy center are confidential if they relate to a forensic exam, interview, advocacy, or therapy. Staff may share them without a judge‑signed subpoena only with law enforcement, the department or its authorized agent, prosecutors, courts, another children’s advocacy center, or a medical or mental‑health professional when the child is seen by that professional. Anyone else needs a subpoena signed by a judge. Staff can also talk with those officials to discuss exams, interviews, advocacy, or therapy.
The law defines a children’s advocacy center. It must be an accredited or associate member of the National Children’s Alliance. The center must offer a child‑friendly place for forensic interviews and medical exams. It must promote a team response to child abuse, with services like interviews, exams, mental health support, advocacy, and case review.
The department can request criminal history checks for board members, employees, final job applicants, contractors, and volunteers at a children’s advocacy center who have contact with children. This helps keep kids safe at centers. It also means those workers and applicants may face background screening.
