Mandatory pre-election tests for voting machines

All voting systems must be tested before each election. The county auditor or a designee runs the test under state rules. For paper ballots, the test uses preaudited ballots with set vote totals and includes overvotes to check rejections. Testing happens at least one week before the election, with notice to party district chairs at least a week before the test. After the test, all materials and the device programming are sealed, and records are kept like other election materials.

Random postelection audits with public results

After each statewide primary, general, and special election, the Secretary of State orders a random audit of one polling place in each county. It runs from the sixth to the eighth day after election day, before canvassing. The county auditor appoints an election board, gives public notice, and receives the wrapped ballots for review. The board checks one federal, one statewide, one legislative (if on the ballot), and one county contest; if results differ from the machines, the Secretary may order more audits that become the official record for canvassing. When done, ballots are prepared and stored under existing law, and the board sends results to the Secretary of State, who publishes them.
