Counties get new animal agriculture fund

The law creates a special state fund for animal agriculture facilities. Money is available on a continuing basis to pay counties. After other required allocations, the Tax Commissioner figures how much of state sales, gross receipts, and use taxes to deposit. The state treasurer deposits that amount and pays counties at least once each fiscal year. Each county’s payment equals the state share of tax on eligible items bought to build or repair local animal agriculture facilities, or to operate or repair equipment used in them. Payments are based on proof of purchase filed with the Tax Commissioner during the year, in the required form. Counties must spend the money on infrastructure near those facilities or on other county expenses. Some sales tax money goes to this fund instead of the general fund. Through June 30, 2027, several other special allocations still apply; after that, two of those end and this fund remains.
