Some local meetings must allow comments

The law requires public comment at some regular meetings. At least one out of four regular meetings each year must allow attendees to speak. This applies to city, county, township, school, park, and water boards. It guarantees more chances for residents to be heard.

Rules and limits for public comment

If you speak, you must give your name and address in writing. Your address is kept private under state open records rules. Local boards can set time limits for each speaker or for the whole comment period. Each board must adopt a written policy for comments. The policy can require comments to be on-topic, bar abusive or unlawful remarks, and block comments that share confidential information or belong in another process.
