Lawyers for jailed people at first hearings

The Commission on Legal Counsel for Indigents runs and monitors the state system that provides lawyers. Courts use the commission’s standards to decide who is indigent and needs a lawyer, and the commission provides those services. At an initial appearance, a jailed person is presumed indigent when the court sets release conditions. The state appropriates $615,734 from the general fund for counsel at initial appearances for July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2027.
