County manages property after city dissolves

When a city dissolves, the county board takes control of the city's property. Streets and alleys can be handled by a township if it makes a choice under the street rule. The county must hire a qualified manager to run the property, collect charges, and sell property under chapter 11-27. The manager must post a surety bond in an amount set by the county, use an approved surety company, and send all money to the county treasurer on the first day of each month. The county pays the bond premium from former city funds if available, otherwise from county funds.

County or township decides street upkeep

After a city dissolves, who maintains the streets depends on the township. If it is in an unorganized township, the county may keep up or vacate the streets and alleys under chapter 40-39. If it is in an organized township, the township may keep up or vacate them under the same chapter. The law does not set funding or timelines.
