New school accreditation rules and choices

The Superintendent sets accreditation rules for public and nonpublic schools. Rules must use student achievement measures and directly aim to improve learning. Schools can use a state process or an approved national or improvement organization. Each option must meet or exceed state standards and show measurable results. A school may choose the option that fits its goals, subject to the Superintendent’s approval. The Superintendent builds the selection process with a steering committee that includes North Dakota United, school administrators, secondary and elementary principals, and the North Dakota School Boards Association, and also reviews options regularly for results.

Free state accreditation; districts pay others

The Superintendent provides a state accreditation option to every public school district at no charge. Districts that choose another option from the state‑approved list must pay that accreditor’s fees and related costs. Districts still choose the option that best fits their needs, but costs depend on the choice.
