Donated medicines for people in emergencies

When the Governor declares a state of emergency, the health department can receive donated prescription drugs and supplies. Licensed staff can give these medicines to people who are impacted by the emergency. This helps you get needed prescriptions during a crisis and can lower your out-of-pocket costs.

New tracking rules for drug wholesalers

Wholesale drug distributors in Nebraska must keep accurate records of all prescription drug receipts, distributions, and dispositions. Any drug that leaves the normal distribution chain must have a paper or electronic pedigree; rules were due by July 1, 2007. The department sets electronic pedigree standards by July 1, 2008 after consulting the FDA, manufacturers, distributors, pharmacies, and others. Until then, drugs leaving the normal chain are not required to use only an electronic pedigree. Distributors other than the original manufacturer must verify all pedigree transactions before further distribution. Retail pharmacies and chain pharmacy warehouses follow these wholesale rules only if they wholesale drugs in Nebraska. Distributors working under the state Prescription Drug Donation Program are exempt from the pedigree requirement.
