Dementia training for Adult Protective Services staff

The law defines an adult protective services official as a DHHS employee who develops or runs adult protective services. Every such official must complete training on caring for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementia. The training is at least one hour and repeats every five years. Officials employed when the law takes effect must finish it within 30 days. The training covers symptoms, respectful communication, handling behaviors, safety like wandering, and alerting law enforcement about abuse or exploitation. It also covers common abuse types, self-neglect, caregiver neglect, and referral steps to local dementia care experts. DHHS may partner with a nonprofit expert to provide this training.
