Cheaper permits for veterans and active-duty

Eligible Nebraska resident veterans get one disabled veteran permit for free. You must have an honorable or general discharge and either a VA disability rating of 50% or more, or a VA pension for total and permanent disability not from line of duty. The permit lasts until you are no longer eligible. Active-duty members stationed at a Nebraska base can buy an annual permit for $5 with military ID and proof of stationing. It is valid through December 31.

Display your permit or face penalties

You must display your permit so it is clearly visible from outside the car. Most permits must be stuck to the lower driver’s side of the front windshield. Hangtags must hang from the rearview mirror or sit on the front dash if there is no mirror. It is illegal to enter a permit area without a valid, displayed permit at any time of year. Except for hangtags, permits are not transferable and are valid only for the vehicle they were issued to. Violations are a Class V misdemeanor, and the court must confiscate any permit bought or used in violation. If the driver cannot be identified, the vehicle owner is treated as responsible.

New hangtag permits for Nebraska vehicles

Beginning January 1, 2027, you can buy an annual hangtag for a Nebraska resident vehicle. It is good through December 31 and works only when displayed in that vehicle. You may move one hangtag between vehicles registered to you in Nebraska. The price equals one resident annual permit plus one duplicate permit, plus a convenience fee capped at $15. Lost or stolen hangtags are not replaced or reproduced.

Permit fees, day permits, and discounts

The annual resident permit fee cannot be more than $50; nonresident annual fees are twice the resident amount. A temporary permit is valid until noon the next day; the resident fee cannot be more than $10, and nonresident temporary fees are twice that. The commission can make a temporary permit valid for one area or any area. It may also offer permits at reduced rates for certain events or time periods.

Where you can buy permits

You can buy non-hangtag permits at commission offices, some park locations, self-service vending stations, county offices, online, and from designated permit agents. Agents may charge and keep an issuing fee set under state rules. Hangtag permits are only sold at the commission’s central and district offices and at designated Nebraska state park locations.
