Jails must follow cross-gender search rules

Every county and city jail must follow the Nebraska Jail Standards Board rules on cross-gender supervision and cross-gender searches. The law makes those standards mandatory statewide.

Around-the-clock female staff for women inmates

In counties that contain a city of the metropolitan or primary class, jails must provide 24-hour supervision by a female officer when a woman is held. The county board appoints the matron, who serves under the sheriff and takes an oath. Matrons are paid from the county treasury only for hours worked and must report when asked. In counties with more than 200,000 people, a deputy or correctional officer must be hired for these duties at not less than $500 per month, paid from the county treasury. The board may also appoint a female officer when a prisoner is sick or under age 16.
