Grants boost microloans for Nebraska small businesses

The law creates a Small Business Investment Program run by the Department of Economic Development. It gives grants to microloan groups, technical assistance groups, and innovation hubs to expand loans and training for microenterprises. Grants must be matched with nonstate funds equal to 35%. Money can set up revolving or guaranty loan funds, build loan‑loss reserves, cover operating costs (up to 20%), and make microloans up to $150,000. If a microenterprise development assistance group gets microloan funds, at least 50% must pay for small‑business technical help. The department works to spread awards across all regions, can coordinate other funding, and contracts with a statewide microenterprise development group. It can award up to $3 million each year; starting in fiscal year 2027–28, it shall award up to $3 million each year.
