Capitol visitors face weapons limits and checks
The law bans knowingly entering or trying to enter Nebraska’s State Capitol with weapons or prohibited substances, with listed exceptions. Covered items include firearms, explosive or fire-starting devices, other combustible devices, hazardous material, paint, and spray paint. Knives are covered if their blades exceed 3.5 inches and, as used or intended, can cause death or serious injury. Exceptions cover prior State Patrol approval, officers on official duty, and qualified current or retired officers carrying under federal law. The federal-law exception uses the rules as they existed on January 1, 2026. People carrying concealed handguns with current, valid Nebraska permits are also exempt, but those controlling a place can still ban concealed handguns. The State Patrol must put Capitol security and weapons-detection procedures in place by January 1, 2027, including detection of prohibited substances. Before implementation, it must consult the Governor, Chief Justice, Legislative Council Executive Board, and State Capitol Administrator.
