Stronger veterans preference in public jobs

The law gives eligible veterans a hiring edge for Nebraska state and local jobs, including new hires, reassignments, transfers, and returns after non-disciplinary separations. In scored exams, it adds 5% to a veteran’s passing score and another 5% for disabled veterans who claim the preference. You are a veteran if you served full-time, were paid, and left with an honorable or general discharge; a spouse qualifies if the veteran has a 100% VA disability or died due to service. A spouse of an active-duty servicemember can claim the preference during active duty and for up to 180 days after separation. To claim, provide proof: DD-214 for veterans; for spouses, proof of marriage and either VA 100% disability or service-death documents; spouses of servicemembers must show active status. If you apply and are not hired, the agency must tell you within 30 days and explain any available appeal.

Voluntary veterans preference in private hiring

Private employers in Nebraska may adopt a written veterans preference for hiring and promotions and must apply it the same way for all candidates. A policy is lawful and is not treated as a violation of state or local equal employment laws. To claim it, veterans and qualifying spouses must provide documents (DD-214, proof of marriage, VA 100% disability or service-death records; spouses of servicemembers show active status). Employers that adopt a policy must notify the Commissioner of Labor, who keeps a registry of such employers.
