The Treasurer keeps a public list of apparent owners you can inspect during business hours. Paid locators cannot inspect or copy these records, and they cannot charge any fee until 24 months after names are published or officially disclosed. Any fee is capped at 10% of the property’s value, and finders must tell you what and where the property is, when it was or will be reported, and that you can claim it from the Treasurer for free. Social Security numbers, birth dates, and last-known addresses are kept confidential; the Auditor of Public Accounts still has full access. The Treasurer may withhold other records as the law allows, but can share them with you and with other states that grant Nebraska similar rights.
All unclaimed property money, including sale proceeds, goes into the Unclaimed Property Trust Fund. The Treasurer pays allowed claims and program costs from this fund, and the Legislature may direct transfers to the General Fund. On or before November 1 each year, any Trust Fund balance over $1,000,000 goes to the permanent school fund. A separate Unclaimed Property Cash Fund holds amounts taken to cover costs, is invested under state law, and transfers to the General Fund only when directed by the Legislature.
The State Treasurer publishes a yearly 'Notice to Owners of Abandoned Property' between March 1 and March 10. It lists names in alphabetical order and the county of any last-known address, and tells you how to ask the Treasurer for the amount, description, and holder’s contact. If you have a listed address and appear entitled to $50 or more, the Treasurer mails you a notice within 120 days of getting the holder’s report. Items under $50 are usually not listed in the newspaper, unless the Treasurer decides it serves the public interest. If no last-known address is on file, the notice is run in a statewide legal newspaper. These publication and mailing rules do not apply to traveler’s checks or money orders covered by section 69-1302.
