The law bars your local electric utility from refusing service if you own a qualifying on-site farm generator. Qualifying means it uses methane, wind, solar, biomass, hydropower, or geothermal; is 100 kW or less; sits on the same property as your electric account; is for farm or horticulture; prevents power flowing back to utility lines; and is not used for net metering. You must tell the utility before you install it. You must meet the utility’s interconnection and safety rules, sign any service agreement, and pay rates and fees that cover the utility’s costs.
