Beginning October 1, 2025, foster parent applicants and renewing foster parents must complete suicide awareness and prevention training. The training must follow the state’s baseline curriculum. It is part of getting a new foster license and each renewal.
The health department creates a standard, evidence-based suicide prevention curriculum with state and national experts. All DHHS child welfare staff who meet directly with children or families must take suicide prevention training every year. They must complete it before any independent contact with youth or families. Employees of child-placing agencies must also finish state-approved training before working alone with youth or families. Agencies can add extra training, and DHHS may approve an existing program if it meets the state baseline. The law takes effect October 1, 2025.
