The Game and Parks Commission can make long-term leases or lease-to-own deals to use land for parks. It can do this with private owners or other governments. The law lets the commission control park property without buying it outright.
Before telling a city or county it plans to add their land to the state park system, the Game and Parks Commission needs approval from the Nebraska Legislature. If the Legislature is not in session, the Executive Board of the Legislative Council can approve instead. When asking for approval, the commission must give an estimated cost, showing what cash funds can cover and what likely needs General Fund money. This approval rule does not apply when section 37-907 already authorizes action.
