Interim appointments and removal protections

If the Legislature is not in session, appointees take office as recess appointees until lawmakers meet. The Governor may remove a member for inefficiency, neglect of duty, or misconduct, but must give written charges, at least 10 days' notice, and a public hearing. The Governor must file the charges, findings, and full record with the Secretary of State.

Term lengths, limits, and vacancies clarified

Commissioners serve four-year terms, starting January 15. Each member stays in office until a successor is appointed and qualifies. If a seat opens mid-term, the appointee serves only the rest of that term, and it does not count as a full term. A person who has served three full terms cannot be reappointed. A seat becomes vacant if a member loses the set party affiliation, moves from the district, or no longer meets a required agriculture role.

Who serves on Game and Parks Commission

The commission has nine members: eight by district and one at-large. The Governor appoints them, and a majority of the Legislature must approve. Members must be Nebraska residents and citizens and be informed about commission work. At least three must be actively engaged in agriculture. No more than five may share the same political party, and district members must live in their district.
