Four-year terms, vacancy and chair rules
Public members serve four-year terms that start on October 1. At first, one charity representative and one trained member serve two-year terms. If a seat opens, the new appointee serves the rest of the term. Members keep serving until a successor is appointed. The committee chooses a chair, who must be a commission member.
More public, victim-focused seats on committee
The committee now has five public members and five commission members. The Governor appoints public members, and the Legislature approves them. Two must come from charities that help victims, with at least one focused on sexual assault, trafficking, or domestic abuse. Two must have training or work experience with victims, with at least one in those same areas. One public member must be a victim. The Governor must appoint all five within 30 days after the law takes effect.
