Bigger survivor checks for State Patrol families
Beginning July 1, 2027, certain Nebraska State Patrol survivor benefits rise to 100% of the officer’s annuity. Before that date, the survivor share stays at 75%. The 100% benefit is paid to a surviving spouse for life or to dependent children under age 19 in the listed cases.
New paycheck rates for school pensions
Starting July 1, 2025, your pension deduction is set each July 1 by the fund’s funded ratio. The rate is 9.75% if the ratio is under 96%. It is 8.75% if 96% to under 98%, 8% if 98% to under 100%, and 7.25% if 100% or more.
More state funding for school pensions
Beginning July 1, 2025, the state pays an extra 2% of total member pay each year to every Class V school district retirement system. Also starting July 1, 2025, the state makes a yearly deposit to the School Retirement Fund based on its funded ratio: 2% when under 96%, 0.7% when 96% to under 100%, and 0% at 100% or more. These amounts are set each July 1 using the most recent actuarial valuation and add money to school pension funds.
Immediate effect and statute cleanup
The law takes effect immediately due to an emergency clause. It also repeals statutes 79-916, 79-958, 79-966, and 81-2026 to align the code with these changes.
