The plan lets you use funds for recognized postsecondary credential programs, as defined by federal 529 rules. This authority applies until January 1, 2029. Credentialing expenses count as qualified education expenses. You can also use funds for registered apprenticeship costs incurred on or after January 1, 2021. The State Treasurer can sign agreements with credential providers to handle payments.
Beginning January 1, 2029, you can use Nebraska education savings plan money to pay K–12 schools. K–12 tuition payments are limited to $10,000 per beneficiary per tax year. Until January 1, 2029, K–12 withdrawals are nonqualified and can cause taxes or penalties. Starting in 2029, when the trust pays a K–12 school, the money becomes the school’s property right away, which can limit refunds.
