New grants to clear river vegetation
The Department of Water, Energy, and Environment offers grants to remove riparian vegetation and to buy removal equipment. Weed management entities, weed control authorities, and natural resources districts that serve a river basin can apply. The Water Resources Cash Fund can pay for these grants in areas with an adopted integrated management plan under state law. The department must provide an application form by January 1, 2027, and may give priority to areas under an interstate compact or decree.
Weed grants lose old priority, funding intent
The law removes the old rule that tied grant priority to the Riparian Vegetation Management Task Force. It also deletes language stating a legislative intent to provide $3 million each year starting in fiscal year 2022-23. The Department of Agriculture still runs the noxious weed and invasive plant grants. Grants continue, but without that priority or stated annual intent.
