Statewide burn ban with local permits

Nebraska now bans bonfires, outdoor rubbish fires, and land-clearing fires statewide. Your local fire chief can allow a burn by issuing a permit when conditions are safe. Permits must list who is responsible, where and when, what burns, acres, and include the chief’s signature. Chiefs may set local permit rules, and you must notify the chief before you start a permitted burn. Fire departments may charge up to $10 per permit, and state or local governments on official jobs pay no fee. The State Fire Marshal posts a sample permit form, and chiefs can delegate duties but not rulemaking.

Burn plan and 30-day permits

If you plan land-management burning, you must file a permit application and a detailed burn plan. The plan names the supervisor, maps the area and firebreaks, lists equipment and weather needs, and notes nearby roads and homes. The fire chief denies noncompliant plans; if complete and safe, the chief must issue a permit. Any permit is valid for up to 30 days. The law defines controlled and prescribed burning so you know which burns these rules cover.
