Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 1 mixed.

ADA protections for sex development differences

If you were born with a disorder or difference in sex development, you have the protections and accommodation rights under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. You can ask for reasonable changes to help you in school or public life. The law does not add new payments; it confirms your ADA rights.

Doctor note for male/female teams

To play on a team labeled for males or for females, a student must give a document signed by a doctor, or signed under a doctor's authority, that confirms the student's sex. This applies to public schools and covered private schools and colleges. Schools must accept this doctor-signed document as proof. Families may need to get this document before tryouts or practices.

Sex-based sports rules for students

The law requires every public school and covered private school and college to label each team as male, female, or coed. Male students cannot join teams labeled for females. Female students cannot join teams labeled for males, unless there is no female team for that sport. These limits do not apply to teams labeled coed or mixed. Schools must use these rules when setting rosters.

Schools set policies, agencies can't punish

Each public school and covered private school and college must adopt a policy to carry out this Act, including rules for visitor conduct. Government agencies, licensing groups, and athletic associations cannot investigate or punish a school solely for keeping separate female teams. These requirements and protections now apply statewide.
