Clear size rules for ATVs and UTVs

Nebraska sets one set of size rules for these vehicles. An ATV is 50 inches wide or less, 1,200 pounds dry or less, has three or more nonhighway tires, and is built for the operator alone or for an operator plus one passenger. A utility‑type vehicle is 74 inches wide or less, 180 inches long or less with bumper, 2,000 pounds dry or less, and has four or more nonhighway tires; it does not include ATVs, golf cars, or low‑speed vehicles. These rules apply for titling, registration, and the Rules of the Road.

No registration for modified ATVs and UTVs

ATVs and utility‑type vehicles with aftermarket parts adding equipment not required by sections 60-6,357 and 60-6,358 cannot be registered. They also cannot be registered in any other vehicle category. Owners must remove or fix the nonconforming parts before they can register.

ATV and UTV rules take effect now

The law takes effect immediately. Agencies and owners must follow the new definitions and registration rules right away. The act also repeals older sections so only the updated rules apply.
