Utilities gain gas and nuclear investment options
Beginning 60 days after passage, New Hampshire electric utilities can own or invest in whole or partial gas or nuclear generating units. Units must be on or connected to the local electric distribution system, and each unit is capped at 5 megawatts. Total covered nameplate capacity cannot exceed 10% of the utility’s peak distribution load. The law also adds gas, hydrogen, nuclear technologies and battery storage to state energy policy goals for reliable power. It repeals two existing limits on utility-funded generating equipment and distributed energy investments. Utilities can request that customers pay their share of gas or nuclear investments through electric rates. Approval requires a rate filing and a Public Utilities Commission finding that both the investment and rate recovery serve the public interest, with balanced consideration of statutory factors.
