Mobile unit speeds sexual-assault evidence pickup

Beginning July 1, 2025, the Department of Safety runs a mobile unit at the state forensic lab to pick up and store sexual-assault evidence. Hospitals must schedule pickup within 10 days after collection. The mobile unit must pick up evidence no later than 20 days after collection. The Department writes rules for how the program works and reports, with a focus on helping rural police. The state provides $200,000 for FY 2026 and $200,000 for FY 2027, including $140,000 each year to make two jobs full-time and $20,000 for refrigerated lock-boxes and equipment.
