Five-year voter list checks start 2026

The law requires local election supervisors to verify the voter checklist in 2026 and every 5 years after. From April 1 to August 1 of a verification year, they must hold at least monthly sessions so people can register or reregister. They must post notice of these sessions in two places, including the town or city website if it exists, and publish the notice at least twice in a local newspaper. After finishing, they must file a certification with the Secretary of State no later than September 1. The law takes effect 60 days after passage.

Reregistration rules and removal safeguards

Starting April 1 of a verification year, supervisors review the checklist and may remove names of people who did not register or reregister. They cannot remove a name unless they sent notice at least 30 days before to the last known address and gave a fair chance to reregister. You are treated as reregistered and do not need to appear if you voted in any election within the last 4 years, or you were added to the checklist within the last 4 years.
