Beginning January 1, 2027, New Mexico wildlife commissioners can be removed only for incompetence, neglect of duty, or wrongdoing in office. The governor can start removal proceedings, but commissioners must receive notice and a chance to be heard. Only the New Mexico Supreme Court can hear these cases initially, and its decision is final. These protections do not prevent vacancies caused by death, resignation, loss of required qualifications, or three consecutive missed meetings.
