Drivers face inspections and fast citations

Officers probing illegal racing or stunt driving must inspect vehicles they reasonably think are unsafe or missing required equipment. If they find problems, they can cite the registered owner. The officer must send the citation to the DMV within 5 days. This speeds up follow-up and possible registration action.

Fix unsafe cars or lose registration

The DMV cancels a car’s registration after certain equipment or safety citations, unless the owner proves the fix within 30 days. After an impound order, the owner has 30 days after the last impound date to pass the DMV inspection. The DMV may extend a 30‑day window by up to 60 more days if the car is still registered and repair work is underway. Courts must tell the DMV to cancel unless the required inspection is completed, and must send the vehicle’s plate, year, make, and model within 5 days.
