New scholarships for social work students

Beginning July 1, 2025, the law provides state funding for social work scholarships at two Nevada universities. The University of Nevada, Reno, gets $1.6 million; the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, gets $400,000. Eligible students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s social work program and doing field training at a qualifying site. A site needs to meet only one of the listed criteria. These include federally certified critical access hospitals, rural clinics, rural hospitals, and rural emergency hospitals. Sites also qualify in HUD-designated qualified census tracts or counties with fewer than 100,000 people. Another option is a community where at least 20% of households were not proficient in English. That measure uses the latest decennial census before training starts. Tribal land also qualifies, as does a government agency facility or health care center mainly serving a community where tribal members commonly live. The law does not set scholarship amounts per student. The universities cannot commit remaining funds after June 30, 2027, and must return unused money to the State General Fund by September 17, 2027.
