Students must put phones away at school
Public school boards must ban student use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices on campus from the first instructional bell to the dismissal bell. This applies starting the 2025–2026 school year and every year after. The policy must include discipline for breaking the rule. Schools can allow device use for emergencies and for students who need devices to monitor health issues. School-issued or school-approved devices that are limited to classroom instruction are allowed. Personal devices include phones, smart watches, smart headphones, laptops, tablets, and smart glasses.
Emergency clause makes law effective now
The law includes an emergency clause, so it takes effect upon passage and approval. The act also states a formal effective date of July 1, 2026.
