New epilepsy symbols on Oklahoma IDs

Beginning June 1, 2026, Oklahoma offers an optional epilepsy symbol on driver licenses and state IDs. A licensed physician must have diagnosed you with epilepsy. You can choose the symbol on your card or a designation in Oklahoma's law enforcement database, OLETS. You can add or remove the designation at any time. Its use is limited to helping law enforcement and emergency medical workers identify, communicate with, and assist you.

Epilepsy death reviews and reporting required

Beginning November 1, 2025, Oklahoma's Chief Medical Examiner must give all office employees information about sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. When an autopsy is performed, its report must investigate whether the death was sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, called SUDEP. This applies when the person had epilepsy or a history of seizures. A SUDEP finding must appear on the death certificate and be reported to the North American SUDEP Registry. The law does not require an autopsy in every such death.

New death-risk guidance for epilepsy care

Beginning November 1, 2025, Oklahoma's health commissioner must issue guidance for clinicians mainly responsible for treating people with epilepsy. It addresses the risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, called SUDEP. The commissioner must consult local and national epilepsy education or service organizations. The guidance must cover convulsive seizures, how often and recently they occur, and their response to medicine or surgery.
