Pointing a gun: penalties and exceptions

The law makes it a crime to point any gun or other deadly weapon at a person, loaded or not. A conviction carries a fine of $100 to $1,000 and up to 12 months in county jail. It is lawful to point a weapon when you can legally possess it and you act in self-defense or to defend property you own, lease, or are allowed to occupy. This applies even without a handgun license, and it covers lawful defensive displays when allowed by law. The law also removes a prior mandatory 3-month jail minimum and a handgun-license revocation and $50 administrative fine.
