Required school eye checks for K, 1st, 3rd

Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, schools must give all kindergarten, first, and third graders a comprehensive binocular vision screening. Schools must complete the screening within 90 days after school starts. These checks are in addition to other required school screenings. The screening must be done by personnel listed on the State Health Department’s registry.

Two-year school eye screening pilot

The State Department of Education, with the State Department of Health, runs a two-year Binocular Vision Screening Pilot Program. It starts July 1, 2026 and looks for convergence insufficiency in K, 1st, and 3rd graders. The state creates a Binocular Screening Revolving Fund to run and maintain the program. Money in the fund must add to, not replace, current school vision funds. By November 1, 2028, the Education Department must submit a report with any recommendations and post it online.
