Certification for peer support specialists

Beginning November 1, 2026, peer recovery support specialists must be certified to use that title when employed by the state, a city or county; a provider that contracts with the state; a provider certified by the Department of Mental Health; a tribe or tribal facility; or an Oklahoma or U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facility. The Board sets education, exam, supervision, continuing education, and conduct rules. You apply to the Department on its forms. Certification lasts two years and must be renewed. Application and renewal fees can be up to $100 each. The Board can suspend, revoke, or refuse renewal if you do not follow the rules. In some cases, your certification only allows services inside your employer’s certified service area. This certification does not let you practice or use titles for other licensed professions unless you hold those licenses. You cannot work under that title unless certified and in compliance.
