New licensing checks for physician assistants
Beginning November 1, 2026, Oklahoma physician assistant license applicants must obtain a national criminal history background check. They must graduate from an accredited physician assistant program recognized by the state medical board. They must also pass a board-recognized physician assistant exam. Applicants must pass the board’s law exam when first licensed and when applying to return to practice.
New prescribing rules for healthcare providers
Beginning November 1, 2026, Oklahoma updates who counts as a licensed practitioner under its Pharmacy Act. It includes licensed advanced practice registered nurses and physician assistants authorized to prescribe within their scope, but removes optometrists from this definition.
