Oklahoma sheriffs gain broader cross-county authority

Beginning November 1, 2025, Oklahoma sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, and reserve deputies have local sheriffs’ powers and duties during assigned out-of-county work. Their home county remains legally responsible for their conduct during these assignments. That county also continues to provide their regular salary, insurance, and other benefits. The law removes the July 1, 2024, cutoff for cross-county duties. It also removes limits tied to the June 2024 National Sheriffs’ Association conference in Oklahoma County.
